Contingency Management Research and Implementation Reports

Contingency Management (CM) is a behavioral intervention for substance use disorders that combines motivation and accountability by leveraging the power of incentives for recovery. CM is the foundation of DynamiCare’s rewards-based approach.

CM is one of the most effective and evidence-based psychosocial interventions for substance use disorders. In over 100 randomized controlled trials and 9 meta-analyses, CM significantly and substantially enhances outcomes.

Despite CM’s proven success, about 90% of U.S. treatment programs don’t use it. Practical barriers to adoption include lack of funding and reimbursement, regulatory hurdles, and logistical challenges.

DynamiCare solves obstacles that have prevented CM’s adoption by using a fully automated, convenient platform that includes random substance tests, GPS treatment attendance tracking, and accountable monetary rewards.

The following free reports have been developed by DynamiCare and are being provided to the public for education on the contingency management model.

 West Virgina Medicaid

West Virginia has seen a 490% increase in the rate of overdose deaths from methamphetamine in the past 5 years. With no FDA-approved medications for Stimulant Use Disorder (StUD), treatment options are limited. In partnering with DynamiCare Health, the aim of this pilot was to determine the feasibility & acceptability of deploying CM through DynamiCare’s platform. DynamiCare Health utilizes Contingency Management, “the only evidence-based treatment for stimulant use disorders” -Bill Haning MD, ASAM President-Elec.

After months of treatment, the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Out of 285 eligible patients, 91% were successfully contacted, and out of the enrollees, 65% completed the entirety of their 6-month program, and 87% of all tests taken by patients were negative for non-prescribed substances. In polling patients and providers for user satisfaction, the results were almost unanimous: the majority of patients and providers would recommend DynamiCare.
